Bike Racks Experiment

On November 27, 2000, Bloomington-Normal Public Transit System introduced bike racks on its Yellow (G) bus route. The Yellow (G) route was chosen because it covers a large area of the community and provides access to Constitution Trail at several points along the route. The racks allow a bike rider to mount their bike to a rack on the front of the bus when riding a bus. Each bike rack will be able to accommodate two bikes. Instructions for using the racks as well as policies governing their use are included in a free handout available on all of the Transit System's fixed route buses. Links to these instructions and policies are also available above.

There is no extra charge for bus riders who use the bike racks.

The racks, which cost about $750 each, were used in an initial trial period to gauge the effectiveness of bike racks. Subsequently, the Board of Trustees authorized equipping all new fixed route replacement buses, anticipated for delivery in early 2004, with bike racks.
